Banco do Brasil private bankers launch Rio-based wealth manager
By Daniela Sirtori-Cortina
Four Banco do Brasil private bankers have launched a new Rio de Janeiro-based wealth management firm that has already garnered $40 million in client assets.
Gabriella Valadares, Herzel Fernandes, Tiago Carrielo and Fábio Bezerra officially launched Monet Investimentos on January 28 as an independent wealth manager on the XP Investimentos platform, Valadares told Citywire Americas.
The firm is already running 150 million Brazilian reais ($40 million) on behalf of clients the team had previously worked with as well as some new relationships, and it's aiming to reach 1 billion reais ($270 million) by year-end.
To achieve that goal, Monet has hired a new advisor, who is set to join in March, and it's looking for at least three more, Valadares said.
She added that her new wealth management firm has plans to eventually expand to São Paulo and she has not dismissed the idea of merging with other firms to boost its market share.
Monet Investimentos caters to clients with more than 3 million reais ($810,735) in assets. The wealth manager has a contract with XP to distribute the products on the broker's platform.
The partners
Like other former private bank employees, the Monet founders decided to go independent because they were seeking to avoid conflicts of interest and to offer their clients open architecture investment solutions.
'We know that Brazilian investors have a culture of entrusting the management of their money to traditional banks,' Valadares said.
'However, due to [the bank's] large client portfolios, a plethora of goals to fulfill, and the fact the product offering was almost exclusively from a single manager or issuer… it was very difficult to provide quality advice, especially in the face of the not unusual conflicts of interest between the objectives of the employer (in this case the bank) and the investors,' she added.
Before starting Monet, Valadares worked as a Banco do Brasil senior private banker from 2013 to 2018. She has more than 12 years of experience in the financial industry.
Fernandes, a wealth veteran, worked at the bank for 31 years as a relationship manager across different client segments.
With 8 years of experience, Carrielo specializes on the ultra-high net worth client segment, focusing on clients with more than 50 million reais ($13.5 million) in assets.
Bezerra, meanwhile, focuses on clients with at least 15 million ($4.05 million) in assets and has worked in the industry for 14 years.
